Although the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last iteration of the the team as we know it, director and co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn teased that the crew could join him over at DC at some point.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, Gunn — who directed the third installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise before making his move to DC — praised the Guardians cast, likening them to family. Gunn also teased that he knows he will work with them in the future at some point, before joking that it might be at his “other job,” referring to his new role as co-head of DC Studios.
“This cast are like my family,” Gunn said. “I cannot tell you how close I am to Chris Pratt and Pom [Klementieff] and Dave [Bautista] and Zoe [Saldaña] and Karen [Gillan]. But I also know I will work again with all those people individually again. Probably at my other job.”
Currently, the future of the DC Universe is relatively unknown, so it’s not impossible that Pratt and the others could find themselves working in it. While the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is also not fully known, most of its core stars have all been very open about the fact that they won’t be returning to the series, calling the third film the last time we’ll see this iteration of the team together.
While much of the DCU’s future remains a mystery, Gunn recently announced that Henry Cavill would be exiting the role of Superman and that Gunn would be writing a new Superman movie. Additionally, several notable cameos have been nixed from The Flash and Wonder Woman 3 is no longer in development. There are also reports that Jason Momoa will no longer be Aquaman and will instead be recast as another DC character.
