Recent rumors began floating around this week that Elizabeth Debicki was picked to play the role of Wonder Woman in James Gunn‘s new DC Universe, a rumor the filmmaker has since shut down.
On the social media platform Threads (via Twitter user DCU Updates), DC Studios co-CEO and director of upcoming Superman James Gunn shot down the rumors of him wanting Debicki to play Wonder Woman.
“This is coming from a site that’s just making up a bunch of stuff (I love working with Elizabeth but I’ve never even had this thought),” said Gunn.
Debicki previously worked with Gunn on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023), where she played the role of Ayesha, the high priestess of the Sovereign and creator of Adam Warlock.
The DCU’s plans for Wonder Woman remain unknown
While Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince/Wonder Woman was a major player in the DC Extended Universe, appearing in six of the 15 movies, Gunn has so far not revealed any plans for the superhero in the forthcoming DCU.
As it stands, the only Wonder Woman-related project in the works for the DCU is Paradise Lost, a Games of Thrones-inspired series set on the island of Themyscira before the birth of Diana Prince. The upcoming Max series will focus on “the darkness, drama, and political intrigue behind this society of only women.”
Gunn previously confirmed that Wonder Woman will be part of DCU: Chapter 1, although her exact role remains unknown at this time. However, she currently remains the only member of the DC Trinity to not have a new film in development. Gunn will kick off the new shared universe with a Superman reboot, which began filming at the end of February, while Batman has The Brave and the Bold in development with The Flash director Andy Muschietti at the helm.
