Iconic director David Lynch has spoken about how he still hopes to make Snootworld — an animated film with a lengthy history.

In an interview with Deadline, Lynch revealed that though Snootworld — which was first being written two decades ago — was recently rejected by Netflix, he still wants to make a film out of the script that he wrote with writer Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride).

“I don’t know when I started thinking about Snoots but I’d do these drawings of Snoots and then a story started to emerge,” Lynch stated. “I got together with Caroline and we worked on a script. Just recently I thought someone might be interested in getting behind this so I presented it to Netflix in the last few months but they rejected it.”

The filmmaker then delved into how the narrative of Snootworld is more “old-fashioned” than most modern animated films, which has made it a bit of a harder sell for studios. He had hoped that his daughter Jennifer might helm it before conceding that she had “so many things in the pipeline that she ultimately thought it would be better for me or someone else to direct it.”

“Snootworld is kind of an old fashioned story and animation today is more about surface jokes,” he explained. “Old fashioned fairytales are considered groaners: apparently people don’t want to see them. It’s a different world now and it’s easier to say no than to say yes … I like this story. It’s something that children and adults can both appreciate … I’ve never really done a straight animation but with computers today it’s possible to do some spectacular things.”

What other movies and shows has David Lynch made?

Some of David Lynch’s other most famous films include 1977’s Eraserhead, 1980’s The Elephant Man, 1986’s Blue Velvet, and 2001’s Mulholland Drive. In terms of television, Lynch co-created Twin Peaks with Mark Frost and came back to direct all 18 episodes of 2017’s Twin Peaks: The Return.
