John Lithgow doesn’t think playing Albus Dumbledore in the forthcoming Harry Potter show will be “that hard.”
Lithgow, who recently starred in 2024’s Conclave, has been cast as Dumbledore in the Harry Potter TV series that is being made for HBO. Paapa Essiedu and Janet McTeer, meanwhile, are both being eyed to play Severus Snape and Minerva McGonagall, respectively.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Lithgow opened up about how he’s currently catching up on the Harry Potter books when appearing on the SmartLess podcast.

Lithgow said he’s currently about halfway through reading the second novel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. “The overall concept of this entire reboot of Harry Potter is an entire season is devoted to a single novel,” he explained.
The actor also said, “You know, Dumbledore is — he’s kind of the nuclear weapon. He only goes on very, very occasionally. I don’t think it’s gonna be that hard a job, and, we’ll just go back and forth.”
Lithgow said that, almost immediately after the Harry Potter casting announcement was made, people began approaching him in public to ask about the show.
“Can you believe this has already started?” Lithgow said. “The deal was only set, like, 48 hours ago, and in airports two weeks ago, somehow or other, people had gotten wind of this, and they were stopping me.”
Francesca Gardiner is serving as the showrunner for the HBO Harry Potter series. Succession and The Menu’s Mark Mylod has also been tapped to direct multiple episodes.
A premiere date for the Harry Potter show has not yet been announced by HBO, though it is expected to premiere sometime in late 2026 or early 2027. No casting for Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, or Hermione Granger has been announced at this time.
