Lizzo To Play Rock & Roll Legend in New Musical Movie

Grammy award-winning rapper and singer Lizzo is set to play a rock and roll legend in a planned musical biopic for Amazon MGM Studios

In addition to starring in a lead role, Lizzo is also attached to produce the biopic alongside Kevin Beisler, Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Forest Whitaker, with Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant) and Kwynn Perry The Burned Photo) writing the screenplay.

What rock and roll legend is Lizzo playing?

The “Truth Hurts” and “About Damn Time” hitmaker has landed her first lead role in Amazon MGM Studios’ Rosetta. She is set to play Sister Rosetta Tharpe, an American gospel singer hailed as “the Godmother of rock and roll.”

Tharpe, who gained popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, has influenced a number of popular musicians including the likes of Little Richard, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, and more. Some of her best songs include “Strange Things Happening Every Day,” “Jericho,” “Didn’t It Rain,” “This Train,” and “Precious Memories,” among others.

Per Deadline’s plot description, Rosetta “will capture a pivotal period in Tharpe’s life—one of groundbreaking innovation, defiant passion, and secret love. As she shatters musical boundaries with her signature guitar sound, she must navigate societal constraints, conceal her love for another woman, and ultimately transform a wedding into one of the most legendary concerts in history—the first stadium show.”

Lizzo’s first movie credit was in 2019’s animated film UglyDolls, in which she lent her voice to Lydia. She then starred in Hustlers the same year as Liz, opposite Constance Wu, Jennifer Lopez, Lili Reinhart, Keke Palmer, and fellow rapper Cardi B.

Lizzo is a recipient of several awards and nominations, including American Music Awards, BET Awards, Grammy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and more. She also earned a Guinness World Record for her song “Truth Hurts” after it spent weeks at the No. 1 spot for a rap single by a female artist.

The singer is also known for her hits like “Juice,” “Good As Hell,” “Boys,” and “Jerome.”
