Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski offers an optimistic update on Top Gun 3.
The second Top Gun movie, released in 2022, came 36 years after the original debuted in theaters in 1986. It also saw the return of Tom Cruise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. With the second movie’s box office success and positive critical reception, it’s no surprise that a third installment is on the horizon — and Kosinski has just added fuel to the anticipation.

In an interview with ScreenRant to promote F1: The Movie (set for release on June 27), the director confirmed that Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger is now writing the script for Top Gun 3. He also revealed that they have an “ambitious” idea. Apart from Kosinski returning to the director’s chair, Cruise is also expected to reprise his role.
“Ehren Kruger is writing the script as we speak. It’s a big idea that I spent almost a year developing — working with some friends at the Navy and Lockheed. And yeah, Ehren’s into it now, so we’ll see how it comes along,” said Kosinski.
He added, “It was about coming up with an idea that — again — felt like a new challenge. Something that opens up the story in a way you just can’t let go. And I think the idea is so ambitious. That’s what’s exciting to me.”
The Tony Scott-directed Top Gun was in a league of its own, but Top Gun: Maverick exceeded expectations. It did not only garner significant box office numbers but also proved to be a critical darling, boasting a 96% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a 99% audience score.
The 1986 original holds a 59% critics’ rating on the review aggregator, though audiences were more generous, giving it an 83%. Both films were box office successes during their respective theatrical runs.
Top Gun: Maverick also stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and more.
Considering the third installment is still in the script stage, it may be a while before any further details are revealed.
