Following the critical and commercial success of Margot Robbie‘s live-action Barbie movie, Mattel Studios is planning another Barbie movie, based on its iconic toy doll line. However, this time, the project is being developed as an animated feature.
Who’s involved in the Barbie animated movie?
According to Deadline, Mattel Studios has teamed up with Illumination to develop a brand new animated movie adaptation of Barbie, which will serve as the first one to be released in theaters. Universal Pictures will mostly likely finance and distribute the movie, due its exclusive partnership with Illumination.
Prior to this project, Mattel had previously released 16 direct-to-video animated Barbie movies from 2001-2009. Some of these titles include Barbie in the Nutcracker, Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper, Barbie: Mermaidia, Barbie & the Diamond Castle, and more.
Further details about the project’s plot, director, writer, and cast are still being kept under wraps. At the moment, Mattel is developing a number of projects, based on their popular toys. These include Amazon’s Masters of the Universe movie with Nicholas Galitzine, Apple’s Matchbox movie with John Cena, A24’s Barney movie, Paramount Pictures’ Major Matt Mason with Tom Hanks, Universal Pictures’ Monster High movie, and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Hot Wheels movie with Jon M. Chu to direct.
Barbie was directed by Gerwig from a screenplay she co-wrote with Noah Baumbach. The movie was led by Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrera. During its theatrical run, it earned a worldwide gross of over $1.4 billion, making it the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Due to its success, rumors about its potential sequel continue to spread online. However, last December 2024, representatives for Warner Bros., Gerwig, and Baumbach denied previous reports about the sequel’s rumored early development.
