While DC Studios is keeping most plot details regarding the Lanterns series under wraps, James Gunn has revealed which of Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan or Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart will serve as the premiere Green Lantern in the upcoming HBO Max outing. In a recent interview, the acclaimed filmmaker opened up about the forthcoming projects on the DCU slate, shedding light on what fans can expect from the Lanterns series in the process.
James Gunn says Lanterns will center around John Stewart’s story
During a recent conversation, the DC Studios co-CEO revealed that despite Lanterns featuring all three Green Lanterns, namely John Stewart, Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan, and Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner, the show will primarily focus on the story of Aaron Pierre’s character.
“We go into Supergirl and Lanterns next summer,” James Gunn stated to CBS Mornings host Vladimir Duthiers. He added, “It’s basically John Stewart’s story in a lot of ways, but with those other characters.”
The much-awaited Lanterns series will introduce DC fans to the duo of John Stewart and Hal Jordan, who will join forces to solve a murder case. While Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, is a veteran of the Green Lantern Corps, Stewart comes in as a rookie officer, having recently gained his powers. As things unfold, Jordan reluctantly agrees to mentor Stewart to get to the bottom of an Earth-based mystery.
In addition to Chandler, Pierre, and Nathan Fillion, the project will also feature Kelly Macdonald, Ulrich Thomsen, Garret Dillahunt, Jason Ritter, and Nicole Ari Parker, among others. Focusing on the story of John Stewart, the Lanterns series contains a total of eight episodes and has recently completed its filming phase. While DC Studios has yet to confirm an official release date for the star-studded show, it should arrive sometime in early 2026.
