Sylvester Stallone opened up about Creed’s possible tragic ending that could have changed the Rocky legacy forever. The actor reflected on the original direction Ryan Coogler had envisioned for the 2015 film and how Stallone’s resistance ultimately helped shape what audiences eventually saw on screen.

Sylvester Stallone says Ryan Coogler initially wanted Rocky to die in Creed

Looking back on his most iconic roles during a sit-down with GQ, Sylvester Stallone revealed that Creed almost featured a tragic ending for his character, Rocky Balboa. According to the actor, director Ryan Coogler was “very persistent” about an ending with a death storyline that would have marked the end of Rocky’s journey.

“I was never comfortable. I dodged that bullet for two years, three years,” Stallone shared. “And Ryan Coogler kept pushing it. But I didn’t want to do it because the way he had written it, Rocky dies. He gets Lou Gehrig’s disease. And I said, I have a big thing about characters like that dying. I’d much rather them get on a train going somewhere, and you never see them again. But to die, it will just bum the audience out completely.”

Stallone, who reprised his legendary role to mentor Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed — the son of Apollo Creed — ultimately stood firm. Once the script was rewritten, he said filming became a rewarding experience, allowing him to explore a more emotional, grounded version of the character. “It was a lot of dramatic acting in that because I couldn’t use my body. I wasn’t fighting. So that was a good challenge, and it turned out pretty well.”

Sylvester Stallone also addressed his absence from Creed III, explaining that the franchise had reached a natural point of evolution. For Stallone, continuing to appear as Adonis’s mentor risked repeating the same emotional beats that defined the earlier films. However, his influence continues to shape the Creed universe. A fourth film is already in development, and Stallone remains involved in other Rocky-related projects, including I Play Rocky.
