The Sopranos creator David Chase has a new HBO show in the works.
Chase is best known for creating The Sopranos, the HBO drama that premiered in 1999. That show, which ran for six seasons, stars James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano and Edie Falco as his wife Carmela, while Lorraine Bracco portrays Jennifer Melfi. The series won a large handful of Primetime Emmy Awards, among many other accolades, during its run.
Following the completion of The Sopranos, a prequel movie titled The Many Saints of Newark was released in 2021. Chase co-wrote and produced that project, while Alan Taylor served as the director.
What is the new show from The Sopranos’ David Chase about?
Per Deadline, Chase is now making his first television show since The Sopranos. It is a limited series titled Project: MKUltra, which will be based on a non-fiction book by John Lisle titled Project Mind Control: Sidney Gottlieb, the CIA, and the Tragedy of MKUltra.
“Project: MKUltra is a dramatic thriller centered on the infamous chemist and spymaster Sidney Gottlieb, often known as The Black Sorcerer, who headed the CIA’s MKUltra Psychedelic program which conducted dangerous and deadly mind control experiments on willing – and unwilling – subjects during the height of the Cold War,” a description of the series reads. “Gottlieb is also known as the unwitting godfather of the entire LSD counterculture.
“…Operated by the CIA in the 1950s and ’60s, the covert MKUltra program sought to counter perceived Soviet and Chinese advances in ‘brainwashing’ techniques by administering psychedelic drugs, practicing hypnosis, and subjecting individuals to torture — often without their knowledge or consent — to elicit confessions.”
Chase will serve as an executive producer for Rivera Pictures on Project: MKUltra alongside Nicole Lambert.
A release date for Project: MKUltra has not yet been set by HBO, and no casting has been announced at this time.
