A new development has emerged for Baywatch as the franchise moves toward its television return, with the Buchannon legacy positioned at the center of the story. A familiar face from the DC TV world will portray Mitch Buchannon’s son, bringing a new generation onto the sand while linking the revival to the original series.
Stephen Amell joins the cast of Fox’s Baywatch reboot
According to Deadline, Stephen Amell has joined Fox Broadcasting Company’s reboot of Baywatch, taking the role of Hobie Buchannon. The network ordered 12 episodes straight to series. Matt Nix developed the project and confirmed Amell as the first actor cast.
Writers portray Hobie as the former wild child from the earlier show who now serves as a Baywatch Captain. He follows the path set by his father Mitch Buchannon, whom David Hasselhoff played. The story begins when Charlie, a daughter Hobie never knew, arrives and asks to train as a lifeguard beside him.
“From the first conversation, Stephen Amell brought exactly what this new chapter of Baywatch demands: heart, intensity, and that undeniable hero energy. He’s the kind of lead who can sprint into danger, carry the emotional weight, and still make it feel fun. We’re so excited to get started,” said Nix.
Brandon Call originated the role for one season before Jeremy Jackson continued it. Fox says the reboot delivers adrenaline fueled rescues, complicated relationships, and beachside heroics with a new ensemble and modern pressures along Southern California’s shoreline.
Fox Entertainment produces with Fremantle. Nix executive produces with McG, Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, Doug Schwartz, Dante Di Loreto, and Mike Horowitz. McG will direct the premiere. Cameras start rolling this spring in Venice Beach and on the Fox Studio Lot in Century City.
The original drama debuted in 1989 and later drew audiences in more than 200 countries. Hasselhoff led the cast and helped launch careers that included Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, and Jason Momoa. Amell previously headlined Arrow, co led Heels, and appears in Suits: LA. UTA, Leverage Management, and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern represent him.
