Compile Heart is best known for their Neptunia role-playing games, but they’re never afraid to try something new. The studio’s latest RPG is Calamity Angels: Special Delivery, which has players operating a delivery service where they have to keep packages safe from dangerous monsters. It’s a unique and charming idea for a game that winds up providing plenty of fun, even if a few ideas aren’t as fleshed out as one would want them to be.
Calamity Angels revolves around you accepting delivery requests, and that’s where its first unique mechanic comes in. You actually have to fit everything you are transporting into your delivery bag in a Resident Evil-esque inventory management minigame. This could lead to the game being punishing, as I could see a situation where you don’t have heals because you had to make space for other items, but the game never gets too difficult, so it never becomes much of a factor.
Sadly, this becomes a regular refrain for the game, where there are cool ideas that never get fully fleshed out. Once you’re out on a delivery, you are treated to a board game area where you can move across spaces after using a spinner. These spaces can lead to battles and different effects for your party, but there’s not much of a strategy here, as it’s mostly random and don’t have a ton of impact on the dungeon boss you eventually fight.
Battles are at least fun in the game, and its main unique idea is that you have to manage your party’s emotions. For example, if a party member is unhappy with how things have been going and feels underappreciated, then they might just ignore your orders. Conversely, you can get some random positive skills as well that can end battles super quickly, so it’s not always a negative. It definitely keeps battles feeling fresh and the player on their toes, so it’s a solid addition even if there’s not a ton of tactical depth to it.
If there’s one aspect of Calamity Angels: Special Delivery that I can fully praise without a need for an asterisk, it is the writing. Each member of your squad has a fun personality, and you get to really care for them thanks to several quests focusing on each character. It’s also an upbeat and fun story to experience, as the characters are always having fun exchanges. This has been a regular strength of Compile Heart, and they make a new cast of characters quite likable.
Calamity Angels: Special Delivery Review: Final Verdict
Filled with charm and featuring one of the most unique role-playing game conceits in recent memory, there is a good reason to check out Calamity Angels: Special Delivery. While a lack of polish and depth keeps it from experiencing greatness, there’s a good foundation here that can be expanded upon going forward.
SCORE: 7/10
As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 7 equates to “Good.” A successful piece of entertainment that is worth checking out, but it may not appeal to everyone.
