Tom Holland‘s recent comments on the future of Spider-Man raised some eyebrows. With Holland already on his fourth main film, the star is looking for the next Spider-Man.
Tom Holland wants to mentor the next generation of Spider-Man
Speaking to Empire in a recent interview, Holland looked to the future of the Spider-Man franchise. The star is getting ready to return for a fourth film in his franchise, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and definitely seems closer to the end of his tenure as the character than the beginning.
When it comes to the future, Holland has no qualms about passing on the role to someone else. In fact, Holland noted that he hopes to be the one who helps mentor the next person to take on the role, no matter which version of Spider-Man they’ll be playing.
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” Holland said. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
Holland’s reference to other Spider characters like Miles, Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Woman are an interesting one. For some time now, rumors have floated around that Brand New Day would be the start of a new trilogy of Spider-Man films starring Holland. Should that be the case, it would actually be the perfect way to introduce these characters.
Following the events of Brand New Day, the MCU as a whole is set to undergo some massive changes, with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars promising to change the landscape of things. After that, a new Spider-Man film could theoretically introduce someone like Morales, Gwen, or a Spider-Woman, and have Holland begin showing them the ropes of what it takes to be Spider-Man. A sixth Spider-Man could then be all about Holland’s Peter Parker passing the torch to the new character, and letting them shine in the MCU going forward.
Of course, all of that remains a bit away from coming to fruition. A lot can change between now and then. It’s still worth noting, though, that Holland seems to have his eyes on the future, and maybe for the first time in his tenure, sees the finish line of his time as Spider-Man in the distance.
