Vertical has unveiled The New Boy trailer for the upcoming U.S. release of the Australian spiritual drama led by two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett. Following its theatrical debut in Australia in July 2023, the film will now finally make its way to select U.S. theaters on May 23, followed by its VOD release on May 30.

What happens in The New Boy trailer?
The video shows Blanchett as a renegade nun, who takes in a nameless Aboriginal orphan boy. While struggling to fit in with the other children at the monastery, he suddenly discovers his supernatural gifts. The ensemble cast also features Aswan Reid, Deborah Mailman, Wayne Blair, Shane Mckenzie Brady, Tyrique Brady, Tyler Spencer, Kyle Miller, Laiken Woolmington, and more.
The New Boy is written and directed by Warwick Thornton. Since the movie had its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, it currently holds a Tomatometer rating of 72% on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition to leading the cast, Blanchett is also serving as a producer alongside Lorenzo De Maio, Georgie Pym, Kath Shelper, and Andrew Upton. The movie is executive produced by Coco Francini and Gretel Packer.
“The film takes place in 1940s Australia at a remote monastery with a mission for Aboriginal children run by a renegade nun, Sister Eileen. A new charge is delivered in the dead of night – a boy who appears to have special powers,” reads the official synopsis. “However, the boy’s Indigenous spiritual life does not mesh with the mission’s Christianity and his mysterious power becomes a threat. Sister Eileen is faced with a choice between the traditions of her faith and the truth embodied in the boy, in this story of spiritual struggle and the cost of survival.”
