Chloe Zhao is preparing to release her next movie, but recently reflected on making 2021’s Eternals, and what she found dangerous about working in the MCU.
What did Chloe Zhao say about making Eternals?
Speaking to Vaniety Fair in a recent interview, Zhao spoke about her upcoming movie, Hamnet. In doing so, Zhao mentioned that her work on Eternals helped her prepare for things like world-building and fleshing out a movie that doesn’t take place in the real world, as her movies prior to Eternals all did.
“Eternals prepared me for Hamnet because it’s world-building. Before that, I had only done films that existed in the real world. I also learned what to do and not to do—what’s realistic and what isn’t,” Zhao said.
Zhao also mentioned that Eternals’ budget, which she describes as “an unlimited amount of money and resources,” could end up being “dangerous” in terms of losing some meaning about what it takes to make a movie.
“Eternals had, like, an unlimited amount of money and resources,” said Zhao. “And here we have one street corner that we can afford, to [stand in for] Stratford…. Eternals didn’t have a lot of limitations, and that is actually quite dangerous. Because we only have that street corner [in Hamnet], suddenly everything has meaning.”
Eternals premiered in 2021, and received mostly mixed reviews. Although the film did gross more than $400 million, it became generally perceived as a failure for Marvel Studios. Currently, there are no plans for a sequel to Eternals, according to Kevin Feige.
