The long-awaited Gears of War movie that is being made for Netflix has received an exciting update.
Gears of War is a video game franchise created by Epic Games, developed and managed by The Coalition, and owned and published by Xbox Game Studios. The first game was released in 2006, while the sixth installment in the main series, Gears of War: E-Day, arrives in 2026.
There’s been talk of a potential Gears of War movie for over a decade; however, it has yet to come to fruition. Netflix picked up the rights to the franchise in 2022, and The Fall Guy’s David Leitch was then tapped to direct a film for the streaming service this past May.
What is the update on the Gears of War movie?
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch and his wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick were asked how far along the project now is at Netflix.
“We’re writing right now with Jon Spaihts, and we’re really excited about it,” McCormick answered. “There’s a lot of energy from [Gears of War company] The Coalition and from Netflix, because The Coalition is releasing a game in 2026. We won’t hit that release date, but maybe something that feels relevant to the release of the new game. It’s an opportunity for David to do a war film, which he hasn’t gotten to do yet, and a bit of sci-fi in his own way with this beloved IP in his own way.”
No other details about the project are available at this time. No casting has yet been announced, and the movie does not yet have a release date.
Before making 2024’s The Fall Guy with Ryan Gosling, Leitch co-directed 2014’s John Wick with Chad Stahelski before he went on to make 2017’s Atomic Blonde, 2018’s Deadpool 2, 2019’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and 2022’s Bullet Train. He has a new movie, titled How to Rob a Bank, that arrives in September 2026.
