What is Beast of War about?
“When their boat is sunk while crossing the Timor Sea during World War II, a young troop of Australian soldiers must find a way to survive the harsh seas on a quickly shrinking life raft,” reads the movie’s official synopsis. “Hundreds of miles from anywhere, they must confront interpersonal conflicts, enemy attacks, and the advances of one very large, very hungry great white shark.”
Beast of War is written and directed by Roache-Turner, who also edited the movie with Regg Skwarko. The R-rated Australian movie is inspired by the true story of the sinking of the HMAS Armidale in 1942. The cast includes Mark Coles Smith, Joel Nankervis, Sam Delich, Lee Tiger Halley, Sam Parsonson, Maximillian Johnson, Tristan McKinnon, and Aswan Reid.
Executive producers are Michael Agar, Steve Boyle, Ester Harding, Diana Le Dean, and Ally Muller, with Chris Brown and Blake Northfield also serving as producers. The creative team also consists of director of photography Mark Wareham, production designer Esther Rosenberg, set decorator Michael O’Connor, costume designer Tracey Rose Sparke, and more. The movie’s practical shark effects were handled by Formation Effects, the studio behind movies like Love and Monsters, Winchester, The Hobbit trilogy, and 30 Days of Night.
