The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc has a good explanation as to why Robert Pattinson’s Batman wasn’t in the spin-off show.
DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Batman was released in United States theaters in 2022. Directed by Matt Reeves, the film sees Pattinson play Batman/Bruce Wayne, while Zoë Kravitz stars as Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Colin Farrell as Oz/The Penguin. A sequel is in development and is currently dated for 2027.
HBO Max’s The Penguin, meanwhile, is a spin-off show that premiered in September 2024. Farrell reprises his role in the series, while Cristin Milioti stars as Sofia Gigante.
What did The Penguin’s Lauren LeFranc say about Robert Pattinson’s Batman?
Following the finale of The Penguin, there was much talk online as to why Pattinson’s Batman character never had a cameo in The Penguin. While Reeves’ The Batman Epic Crime Saga encompasses all of Gotham City, fans specifically wondered why the Caped Crusader never appeared when so much of Gotham becomes tangled up in the spin-off series’ plot.
LeFranc told The Hollywood Reporter, “[Reeves] and I talked about it a lot. It just didn’t feel necessary. It felt like we’d be wrenching him in just to say we had The Batman in our show, when in reality, I feel like my goal at least was always to create rich enough, compelling characters that you weren’t desperate to see him, which I know is a tall order because so many people love Batman, and Rob Pattinson is so good as Batman. But, yes, we were doing something a little different. We’re through the lens of Oz. We’re on the streets. There’s a gang war happening. We always would say, ‘Batman’s up high looking down on Gotham, and Oz is in the muck, wanting to get up there and to achieve a level of power.’ So, yes, we talked about it, but honestly, we just didn’t want to interfere with the story that we had.”
When asked if Pattinson could appear in a potential The Penguin Season 2, LeFranc said, “I mean, there’s not even a season two right now. So I can’t say anything about that.”
