CBS News is giving 60 Minutes a major overhaul with four new hires. The new move comes after a wave of high-profile departures. This left the flagship magazine looking for a new direction. Anderson Cooper, Sharyn Alfonsi, Cecilia Vega, and Scott Pelley left the magazine earlier this year.
According to Variety, the Paramount Skydance news division announced Tuesday that four new contributors are joining the long-running TV news magazine broadcast. The lineup includes the conservative New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, author Sebastian Junger, filmmaker Gianna Toboni, and British journalist Trevor Phillips. CBS also confirmed that Norah O’Donnell will take on additional duties with the program as part of the overhaul.
According to executive producer Nick Bilton, the newly joined contributors are “entrepreneurial journalists” who have built audiences through books, documentaries, podcasts, and digital publications. He said their expertise in multiple forms of media will help 60 Minutes evolve while continuing its tradition of in-depth reporting.
Known for years of hard-hitting reporting on conflict and corruption, Junger and Toboni seem like a natural fit for 60 Minutes. On the other hand, Douthat and Philips come from a commentary and opinion background. This blend of styles could bring a different tone for the show, which traditionally leaned on straight investigative journalism.
The shake-up follows a broader overhaul pushed by CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, who has argued that the show needs to modernize to stay relevant with a younger, digital-first audience. That effort led to some big changes as executive producer Tanya Simon, correspondents Alfonsi and Vega, and executive Director Draggan Mihailovich left earlier this year. Pelley left the show after a clash with Bilton. Cooper’s departure came even earlier, and many saw it as a sign he wasn’t comfortable with the direction CBS News was heading under Weiss.
